The Australian Republic Movement has recently proposed their preferred model for an Australian Republic, which they hope to take to a referendum. Under this model, becoming a republic would abolish Australia's connection to the monarchy and the Governor-General would no longer be appointed by federal Parliament. Instead, each state parliament would nominate 1 candidate, and the federal government would nominate 3 candidates. These candidates would then go to a general election where all of Australia would vote. The successful candidate would serve a 5 year term.
